Just another Journalspace.com Blogs weblogI am trying to make the traditional sweet potato casserole with marshmellows on top. I went to the grocery store and got sweet potatoes out of a box clearly labeled sweet potatoes. But now I am home peeling and slicing them and I am shocked to find that they are very light colored in the middle. They almost look as light as regular potatoes. Was I supposed to buy yams? The recipe is called sweet potatoe casserole and calls for sweet potatoes, but I always remember this casserole having orange potatoes. Confused please help.
Well i only know of sweet potatoes that looks like normal potatoes… so its ok im certain of that, i live in the caribbean n i never saw sweet potatoes lookin ne different from the normal ones (brown n have a little pinkish colour in the skin is the only difference)…
Yam n sweet potatoes are kinda the same the two r not distantly related n the potato u have is jus another kind from the many grown…
Good Luck Hop It Come Out Good : )

Are they kind of pointy on each end? If so, they are probably sweet ptoatoes (or yams, same thing) just a bit paler color flesh. If you’re cooking them anyway to make a casserole, toss in a couple peeled carrots as well to add more orange color. You won’t taste the carrots.
PS: Yams are sweet potatoes grown in Louisiana.

In the USA you are most likely buying sweet potatoes. You will find yams in South America. They are larger and not as sweet as sweet potatoes. In the stores they label lager and not as colorful sweet spuds as yams. This is why you are confused. You can always add in a little extra brown sugar. Go for it you will be just fine. Happy cooking!!

They will be fine. If you want more color add pealed carrots chunked up. The recipe you are using is also made with carrots and the combination is delicious.
